Bombay Bicycle Club – Shoreditch House

Recipe for a perfect summer’s evening:

In a roof terrace, mix a couple of ice cold beers, with a dash on sunshine, sprinkle in a few synchronized swimmers, add a swimming pool and top with a Indie Rock band from Crouch End…

and VOILA – A beautiful moment in time is born with a beautiful set from the Bombay Bicycle Club…

1

Shoreditch house put on a wonderful show for its members by inviting us to a pool side show of the Bombay Bicycle Club. Sat among friends and other members sipping Ice Cold drinks by the poolside – Bombay Bicycle Club took to the stage.

Mixing guitar, synth, dancing and vocals that intertwined themselves between the  last of the summer rays – people flocked to the poolside to dance, tap and clap to the set that ensued.

The tambourine was a shaking, people’s hand were clapping and my foot was tapping as the BBC took us through a set that eased you into the end of the weekend.

As the set drew to an end and our souls full of summer indie vibes the band invited out some special guests!

The crowd went wild as the girls threw themselves in the air in pure synchronicity!

The splashes were high as the excitement grew!

Too add to all the show – the ladies had a little added extras as Jack Steadman stripped down to his smalls and dived in followed by a fully clothed Ed Nash

A great evening of ENTERTAINMENT!

Today’s Workout – HotPod Yoga

About a year ago I started investigating yoga. Being a typical westerner I was silly in thinking that yoga was something that post uni “finding themselves in India” students picked up to exemplify how spiritual they were upon returning…how wrong was I!

The more I found out, read and tried but more hooked I became!

Joseph Pilates once wrote…

“If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old; if it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.”

From doing weights I have noticed my flexibility has suffered and was finding myself un-able to touch my toes! as a 25 year old…this is serious!

So I took it upon myself to sort this out. I joined hotpod yoga – a hot yoga company based in Brixton (They have other venues dotted about but for the full list go to www.hotpodyoga.com). The “pod” is 37 degrees – as a sun baby its like stepping into a tropical paradise – which allows you to warm your muscles to increase your stretch.Snap10

The ambiance is like no other yoga I have ever attended. The instructors play minimal dub/electro which I believe is more relaxing then some of the conventional music played at other yoga’s which can be off putting or make a dis-connect if you focus on the music. The pod is in the dark with only a purple light allowing you to fully focus on the yoga rather than fretting that people will notice the limitations of my stretch!

The instructors are incredible: Cool, calm, know their stuff and also make an effort to create an environment of relaxation. If all of the abve was not enough – sometimes you receive a head massage in the final rest and relaxation when you least expect it – trust me – its incredible!

Within 2 weeks – I could head stand, touch my toes, balance in various yoga poses and focus on my mind and body.

I found my ability to zen at situations and found an inner strength of relaxing into a stretch when situations of stress arose.

Whatever your fitness thread is – try and fit in some yoga. Even if you’re not a gym bunny – the amount of hours we spend on the computer these days has an impact on our spines. To live a long and youthful life we must invest time into protecting our spines.

Use yoga as a practice to un-wind, stretch and have some you time. It is amazing how quickly your ind can reset if you allow the oxygen flow and the quiet to rule for just one hour a day.

Today’s Outfit – Running about town

220414 - black dress

Dress: American Apparel

Shoes: H&M

Bag: Longchamp

Ahhh so woken up this week and my head is firmly still on Easter holiday mode! Today is a busy day – back to work, off to an exhibition and have the gym this evening… oh yeah and I need to eat, breathe and sleep as well.

Work is full on at the moment so I needed an outfit which is smart comfortable and can transcend into evening wear – especially Shoreditch evening wear. The dress is knee length and cotton therefore the material is soft and suits all weather and is appropriate for all offices. I have paired this with some H&M wedges – the perfect shoe for having the elegance of a heel while keeping the ability to rush around the city.

In my Longchamp handbag I have put all my gym clothes in – a stylish way of being able to move from work to play to the gym without having to carry a Sports bag

I am off to the London Newcastle Oasis Exhibition – Chasing the Sun http://londonewcastle.com/arts-programme/events/2014-04-11/chasing-the-sun-oasis-1993-1997/ – I was a huge Oasis fan so looking forward to sneaking this in after work.

Tonight’s Workout: Chest and Arms for 40 minutes followed by 20 minutes of HIIT – training my brother and cousin tonight who are new to weights so should be quite a fun evening.

Have a wonderful week – and if you can head down to the exhibition – GO!

Today’s London – Oasis

Today is gonna be the day
That they’re gonna throw it back to you…

This week my friend Claire and I went to see an exhibition of rare photographs, artifacts and memorabilia of Oasis’ early years to mark the 20th anniversary of the band’s debut single ‘Supersonic’.

Titled Chasing the Sun: Oasis 1993–1997, the exhibition will opened at the the Londonewcastle Project Space in Shoreditch, London – the first exhibition of its kind dedicated directly to the band!

10176163_10152127438158285_7435309640023317817_n
Curated by photographer Lawrence Watson, the exhibition documents many of the band’s now-legendary gigs, from Knebworth to Glastonbury to London’s 100 Club, as well as the creation of their albums ‘Definitely Maybe’, ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’ and ‘Be Here Now’. It featured previously unseen images from photographers Jill Furminovsky, Paul Slattery, Tom Sheehan, Kevin Cummins and Jamie Fry.

The exhibition is taking place to mark the reissue of the band’s 1994 debut album ‘Definitely Maybe’. They had a set which the exhibition had created in order for us all to re-live the albumn cover – I went straight back to my rock’n’roll days whereas Claire was poised at the ready (I think she may have done this before…)

Claire and I – delighted from reminiscent memories of Wonderwall and the golden years of Oasis – giggled from room to room as we photo-bombed the videos dreaming of witnessing the band re-unite or at least get on long enough to hold a series of gigs – we will hold off thinking they will be the Glastonbury headliner!

Today’s London – Women and Whisky

Women and whiskey… you must be wondering what I mean? Well let me explain.SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1001

I was invited to a very special event last night hosted at The Soho Whisky Club an elegant members’ bar tucked above The Vintage House in the heart of London’s Soho. It has over 400 whiskies from around the world on offer, many of which are rare and no longer commercially available.

The night was an intimate whisky tasting for women lead by whisky expert and ‘spirit guide’, Zoe Toolan in the surrounds of the usually members-only club.SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1023

The tasting involved a brief introduction to whisky, followed by tasting six whiskies from a varied selection of single malt and blended whiskies, including: Chivas Regal 25; Ballantine’s 17; The Glenlivet 21; and Royal Salute 21.SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1011

The night’s theme was to embrace new research showing that women drink whisky and the host created nights, where whiskies are available to taste in an informal environment with other like-minded women.

SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1018

At the beginning of the night we were welcomed in and greeted with beautiful canape’s – Carpaccio Beef, Beetroot and Feta and Smoked Salmon. My friend who came with me, Katherine, and I lined our stomach with a few of these tasters and made our way to our table. Whisky on an empty stomach was definitely a no no

SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1000

The informal nature of the evening meant that we were on a table with two other girls, Fran and Katie, who joined us in our Whisky tasting experience. Fortunately we had picked our table well, as I noticed around the room there were a few ladies who knew a thing about Whisky (a subject I knew little about), as all of us were newbies to the world of Whisky – bar it being something we nicked from our parents drinks cabinets…

SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1003SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1005

We started with a viewing of some adverts for Whisky, which clearly are aimed at men, to encourage us to think about Whisky marketing tactics. So far any woman who featured in these videos was either ridiculously sexy, male pleasing, creatures of the night or class A bitches. Zoe explained that many Whisky companies are missing this gap in the whisky market as up to a third of customers are women.

SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1025

Next – the fun bit – the tasting!

First off – The Glass – Glencairn Glass –  this little short and portley allows one to appreciate the colour of the whisky. Introduced in 2001 this little glass is now The Official Whisky Glass…

SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1046    SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1047

Whisky number 1: Chivas Regal 25 – soft, caramel on the eyes, a blend that was created in 1909 that  boomed in New York pre prohibition. First Whisky down feeling like a pro – but yet to taste something different than just Whisky

SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1022

Whisky number 2: Royal Salute 21 – Elegant, soft and quite exciting on the tongue – and this little beauty comes in a ruby flagon. I liked this one more than the first and started to notice the difference between the former and the latter. Not quite at the same standard as some of the ladies around the room who were picking up notes I was unaware were in whisky. The journey continues…

Whisky number 3: Long Morn 16 – Rich, warm and had an “umph” to it. As the tasting continued and the mood turned quite jovial and relaxed due to the ensuing tipsiness from the whisky – my note taking became minimal – therefore I apologise for 4,5,6

The next three whisky’s were paired with food – this little turn of events pricked my attention – as a huge fan of Cheese and Wine nights – a whisky night is quite a novel idea.SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1068

Whisky Number 4: Ballantine’s 17 served with a slice of juicy pineapple. At 55.5% the standard had been set for the next two whiskys. For those of you who are fans of the Hawaiian pizza – this one is for you.

Whisky Number 5: The Glenlivet 21 – served with salami and olives – match made in heaven. The smokiness of the whisky with the meat created a sneaky little foxtrot on the taste-buds as it made its way down

Whisky Number 6: This whisky – the Aberlour A’Bunadh coming in at 60.2% this little number was served with a chocolate cornflake biscuit treat – delicious – my favourite and ended up coming home with me!

SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1072

A little giggly and filled with the spirits of the evening (both alcoholic and emotionally); Katherine and I sauntered off into Soho for dinner accompanied by our new fellow Whisky connoisseurs, Katie and Fran, to continue what turned out to be quite a wonderful evening

SohoWhiskyClub_160414-1082A thank you to the Soho Whisky House, Zoe and also my friends at Campbell-Bell for putting together such a perfect evening www.campbell-bell.com

I can grab this whenever and chuck it on for a quick run or a yoga session or whatever tickles my fancy

Todays London – Chotto Matte – Soho

Japan meets Peru : Chotto Matte hits Frith Street!

Edamame

Edamame dusted with sea salt

This Japanese Peruvian fusion is welcomed addition to the wonderland of restaurants available to us Londoners. Opened in September it’s black simple exterior invites you in to a subtlety lit bar – perfect for a date or relaxing drinks with friends.

Mother and Brother

My mom visiting London from the Countryside to visit – and I thought this would be the perfect choice of modern, fresh and innovative cuisine to tantalise her taste buds on her first night in The Big Smoke.

We were guided to our table and within minutes were sat swirly a beautiful glass of local Soho Sauvignon Blanc. The cocktail list was inviting – with a selection of cocktails with “character”. The cocktail list was slit into sections “anti-depressants – cocktails with personality” and also “Alternative Therapies –just as fun but without the alcohol”… As my brother is on Stoptober – he settled in with a Shiso Fizz! A few little appetisers and we were ready to begin…

9

The menu was vast and we all concurred that if we all picked two dishes each – we could tell the tale via our taste buds in an abundance of sharers… The story began…

¥ barriguita de chanchito

18

¥ ojo de costilla

17

¥ pollo peruano

16

¥ camerón tigre nipón

15

¥ cangrejos de concha bianda

14

¥ gambas japonesas
¥ bacalao negro aji miso

Each piece was delicately slice, every detail taken into account and the freshest of ingredients.

As I toured the restaurant watching the sushi chefs carve slices of delicate fish, flames bursting from the woks exploding flavours into the air to dance with your senses. You could see the variety, colour and freshness of the ingredients used and the meticulous care taken for each dish that was provided tour party.

19

I will recommend visiting the bathroom…but that discovery I will leave to you.

The food: delicate, full of flavour and perfectly fused
The wine: well selected and extensive choice
The service: tentative – at times a bit hard to get a drink
The bill: reflected the quality and standard of food while leaving us with a smile

Todays Workout – Ab Workout

This year I have been really focusing on getting my body into shape. I turn 25 mid this year so the time is now for me to transform to be the best woman I can be.

Abs are one area that really can make or break a bikini situation. For women they are one of the toughest areas as we carry fat on our stomachs for when we are ready for babies.

To get a flat stomach it is a combination of two factors: Nutrition and Exercise.

If you have weight to lose HIIT exercises combined with strength will help you lose the excess weight.

Once you get lower – ab exercises do help define your stomach.

Todays London – Sushi Making Course

For my Christmas present – my beautiful beau Nicolas took us on a sushi making course with a Michelin Star Chef

16 15

The Ichi Sushi & Sashimi Bar we went to was beautiful – it looked out on to Big Ben and we sipped latte’s as we waited for our course to begin.

15 3

We were greeted by ladies dressed in kimono’s and were taken to our tables where we were offered edamame peas and sparkling sake cocktails (I wasn’t so sure as just turned 12pm but went for it)

1 5 2

We were given little aprons and our own stations before our sushi chef began to teach. He threw us straight in there making our first vegetarian maki roll. We then continued to make salmon and avocado maki rolls. Moving on swiftly we were taught dragon rolls – deliciously covered in sesame seeds – which personally are my favourite!

4 12 13

It was fun watching the people in the class master the art of the sushi roll. The rice was so sticky – and yes I ended up with most of it littered around me – and the rolling a delicate art…Nicolas and I persevered!

10

One of the highlights was dressing a dragon roll with fresh salmon then been given a BLOWTORCH to toast it to give it a delicious flavour – my god it was incredible!

We finally completed the hand roll – which to my delight we were told to stuff with as much fresh salmon as possible! Delicious!

11 or  14

We placed our sushi on trays (you decide who’s design is better) and then the best bit…we got to eat it all!

 98

We were brought fresh tuna and salmon sashimi (personally my favourite) served with fresh wasabi – still blows your mouth to new levels.

7 6

Once we were sufficiently stuffed – poor effort on both our parts – we tweezed all the last bits of fresh salmon and went for a walk along the south bank to ease our bellys…

Definitely recommend!

Today’s London – Jackson and Rye…

Some close friends of mine have unfortunately had to up root and move back to Essex due to some annoying circumstances related to their house move…

In light of this we decided that we should commiserate their leave with a dinner out at the new Jackson and Rye restaurant. It was a “mixed bag” experience…

9

Nicolas and I arrived before our guests and were seated. Nicolas decided to jump in with a Bloody Mary – simple, delicious and well a Bloody Mary

8

I grew a little nibbly waiting for our guests so ordered the bar nuts – which were quite frankly disgusting…on the menu they were “pecans, cashews and peanuts” we received something that didn’t taste to dissimilar than sugar puffs…£3.50 wasted.

6

Our friends Rosie and Ben had arrived and we started chatting and reminiscing over past fun occasions and our beautiful friends wedding.

After about 10 minutes the waitress took our drink order (well half the tables – I think she thought Nicolas and I were done after our one drink?) we also ordered some calamari to share…crunchy and yummy – definitely try it

5

We then set to order. The menu is all-american food so “shrimp” “steak” and “fries” inter mixed with chowders, grills and burgers. The boys ordered “steak and eggs”. Nicolas ordered Medium Rare, and Ben ordered Rare. I choose the Market Fish which was Tuna steak – I choose Rare also. Finally Rosie decided on the Cod chowder.

4 3 2

The ambiance was created by dim lighting, all american music and a speak easy interior. It made good lighting for a date to fuel a bit of romance. Who doesn’t love a bit of soft lighting…

However the service does not make for a good evening… Getting a drink was like trying to catch a fly Mr Miyagi style.

The food was nice, true to its american style and there was not any complaints – Rosie’s chowder was “delicious” the boys steaks turned out to be Bavette’s and my Tuna came served on a bed of delicious green beans.

Following our meals a kind chap visited our tables and let the boys sample the Rye Whiskeys – explaining all about them and letting us try and wee sip

Ben ordered a Rye while I ordered a hand dripped Guatemalan coffee. Not sure what was hand-dripped about it – ben said it tasted like kenco – but it wasn’t too bad so couldn’t complain.

1

Perhaps I need to visit Jackson + Rye for brunch rather than dinner. The experience was…well…fine but the service was lack lustre. Could I put this place in the list of “oh so pretentious” average diners…possibly but I will give it a second chance and try brunch
