Brunch at Milkwood, Herne Hill

milkwood herne hill brunch in brixton cyntra charlesworth

Milkwood, Herne Hill

Who doesn’t love to Brunch!

It’s what the weekend is made for. While the sun is shining this beautiful October it is the perfect time to wrap up warm, chuck on those sunnies and head out for a weekend stroll.

Clocking up those steps and then replenishing with a healthy brunch is always a perfect way to start the day.

Brockwell Park

This weekend I went for a beautiful stroll around Brockwell Park, beautiful and full of life, the park is made up of a multitude of activities to suit all. My friend, Sasha, and I went for a morning coffee and a walk. As we strolled out of the park and into Herne Hill, our stomachs began to rumble, so we went on a hunt for some healthy replenishment.

Brunch In Herne Hill

Nestled in the heart of Herne Hill lies a delightful little kitchen+bar, Milkwood.

We were greeted by the friendly staff and quickly proceeded to our table. The decor is delightful! Subdued lighting and wooden walls – it really made for a cosy stop to brunch.

Smoothies

Sasha and I sat down and quickly ordered some drinks. Sasha rebooted her caffeine levels with a cappuccino while I choose one of the fresh smoothies Strawberry, Cucumber and Mint, to rehydrate.

Fresh, tasty and oh so juicy! I would definitely give this smoothie a try!

Best Eggs in Herne Hill

We then made our way to the brunch menu. From the simplicity of eggs any way on toast to the regulars of Eggs Royale, or the sweetness of pancakes…Milkwood caters to all tastes.

Sasha and I ordered. Sasha (little miss sweet tooth) indulged in the Blueberry Pancakes as I ummed and erred between the Eggs Royale and the Avo and Eggs on Sourdough…

 Avocado always wins!

milkwood herne hill brunch in brixton cyntra charlesworth

My oh my! I made the right choice. The avocado was gorgeous! Smooth and seasoned to perfection. The eggs broke perfectly and the yolk meandered through the avocado and toast. The pea shoots added a perfect crunch. The garnish of jalapeños and chilli added a dimension to the dish that married well with the flavours.

Every mouthful was delightful. Filling as it was – the dish was light and flavourful and really sets you up for the day.

 sasha brown

New Jersey-born Sasha tucked in Blueberry Pancakes as she reminisced on a trip she had to New York. As a connoisseur to the American breakfast she remarked on the delicate flavour of the pancakes which instead of cream had creme fraiche which matched the sweetness with an ounce of sourness to balance the meal.

Cyntra Charlesworth

Full, warm and bellies content. We mused at on how reasonable the brunch came to. Barely over the £20 mark, we left full of smiles to continue our weekend stroll into Brixton.

If you are seeking a weekend brunch and stroll I would highly recommend this little gem in the heart of Herne Hill.

Mira Manek: Healthy Indian Cuisine

On Wednesday I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Mira Manek the beautiful chef behind Mira Manek Blog and the #HealthyIndian.

Inspired by yoga to return to the food that her mother, grandmother and aunts have cooked over the years: She began her journey on combining own home cooked food with healthy and fresh ingredients to bring about a new concept of Indian food as healthy and not heavy.

I arrived with my BFF, Lucy, to a MasterClass in Healthy Indian Cuisine to be met with a Feast.

I could only describe it as a prequel to an Indian Christmas

Vegetarian and pre-dominantly Gluten-Free: I cannot wait till her book is released new year.

Lucy and I stood in awe as more and more fresh, delicious and enticing food began arriving out of the kitchen

The platters of fresh ingredients had us salivating!

We decided to get some non-alcoholic cocktails to distract us as Mira set up her event

Lucy and I shared a plate as our bellies were so satiated from the mains…

We were indulged with Divine Mocha Cake with Nutmeg & Mocha Cashew Frosting, Raw Mocha Flapjacks with Nutmeg, and Almond Cocktails. The main event for me though was the Saffron and Cardamon Cheesecake

I have not given the full menu for the feast that was provided but my goodness this lady is one to watch! Get over to her website and Instagram.
She hosts link ups for yoga breakfast and supper clubs.

She will be the hot new thing of 2016!

We said our thank you’s and goodbyes to Mira and headed out into the Autumn Evening to sip on a mint tea and enjoy the sounds of City of London Sinfonia.

8 Minutes to get Lean and Toned Abs

Fall is here and dragging yourself out of bed in the morning for that gym workout is the last thing on your mind.

You start work in the dark and finish in the dark. The sun has barely grazed the skies on your commute.

It’s natural to want to stay in bed. When it is dark you should be asleep. In the darker months we get less sunlight and our bodies need the night to re-cooperate. Sunlight naturally wakes us up and we should let nature take its course.

Having said that though… here is a NON-EXCUSABLE  8 minute Ab Workout to start every day as you mean to go on. Keeping you slim and toned through those winter months ready for showing off under those layers.

Passion 4 Profession
This workout I have been using for years. It is tough the first time but persevere and soon it will become part of your morning routine. If you can do this one every other day or every 2 days you will have a great start.
It walks you through it and gives you breaks therefore giving you time for the breaks you need
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-9L0J_9qag

Fitness Blender
This workout is perfect for everyday.
It engages those core lower ab muscles and gives you a range of movement which you can do everyday on top of your workout schedule.
This one is more female friendly than the other
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBFdBnIbZRo

All you need for both these exercises is a yoga mat or two towels. Wake up in the morning, have a nice big glass of water and before you have a shower set this time to have a little boost to get your abs toned, lean and fat burning before you have even had your morning coffee.

Bosh!

Travel With Work: Healthy in Manchester

Manchester

I travel a lot out of passion and for work. When I travel with work it means I stay in hotels and it can be very easy to eat out a lot and unhealthily. I am hoping to put together a guide to the places I stay and the gems I find to help those keep healthy in the places I stay.

I am also going to apply this to holiday hot spots – as its nice to find perfect little gems to fit in-between the cocktails and the tanning

Healthy in… Manchester

manchester

Food

Let’s begin with some food. I found this wonderful place for breakfast – lunch called…

55 Thomas Street,
Manchester, M4 1NA.
0161 832 3233

As I wandered through the Northern Quarter in the hunt for something that wasn’t in a burrito, burger, or dripping in some all American sauce, I stumbled across the Teacup Kitchen. I had a look inside and was taken by their advertisement of Healthy and Hearty lunches. I chatted with the host and asked him what the Soup of the Day was… (my eyes glanced to their pledge to get the best ingredients and sourced from the best places)

To my delight, he said “Celeriac with Truffle Oil”

Celeriac soup

Sold!

I was seated in this beautiful little restaurant that was informal and casual and had a buzz. I also ordered from their list of juices (tick) and went for the booster.

juice

All in all, they have a delightful selection of healthy and not so healthy therefore if you are with guests or colleagues who give you a bashing for being “too healthy” then you can bring them here and they can shovel away the sugar while you peruse the goods.

shlurp

Unit 2, Brazennose House East, Brazennose Street, Manchester M2 5BP

I was lucky enough to stumble on Shlurp a soup bar that makes everything fresh, all locally sourced and in season. They have options from Value to Skinny, Veggie to Meat. There is an offer of soup and a salad which is perfect to cover the nice comfort of the warmth and my snack later in the afternoon. Their ethos is incredible and they really care about the contents of their food. They let you know the Fat, Salt and Wheat and all other factors which concern those who look after their health.

Workout

Getting a workout when you are away from home is hard. You can though tactically book a hotel with a gym.

Here are some of the Central Manchester Hotels with Gyms

Doubletree Hilton

Radisson Blu

Britannia Sachas Hotel

Malmaison

Be savvy when you book accommodation as it will be your home and make sure you get all you need.

Eating Out

Manchester has a plethora of great restaurants. There are the more hipster ones in the Northern Quarter but those are usually the not so good for your waistline ones.

My favourite has to be…

 7

I walked through the Northern Quarter and up to Oldham Road where I discovered this small little family run restaurant.

6

The insides were humble and I was greeted by a small but welcoming host who asked how she could help.

The restaurant prides itself on being a family run establishment providing the healthiest and freshest home cooked Vietnamese food to the heart of Manchester

8

I read through the menu checking out all the delicious offerings from Vietnamese Salads to the traditional Pho

I settled on Prawn Summer Rolls and Chicken Pho.

Phở, (pronounced fuh) is one of the healthiest and most delicious Vietnamese dishes eaten every day by the Vietnamese for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Pho is a fresh, nutritious & tasty broth-based noodle soup. The dish is served with a side plate of fresh herbs, sliced-up chillies and lime wedges. The best part is that you can customize your Pho to what you desire to suit your taste.

  5

My Summer Rolls arrived – so fresh and low in calorie.

The Pho arrived and it looked and smelt beautiful

1002528_10152573875868285_5913441597258204169_n

I added my fresh veg and some added chilli to give it a kick. Chillies despite their infamous reputation of adding heat to a meal – have a plethora of health benefits from lowering LDL, high in vitamin C, A and B and high in a number of minerals

I left Saigon Lotus with a belly full of goodness and a smile on my face. I would definitely recommend for dining on your own, with a partner or out with friends.

tip: When eating out stick to Asian food or simple protein and veg combos for a healthy alternative when it’s not your choice of the venue

So I hope you like it – and find it informative. Please comment below and let me know of any healthy finds you have in Manchester. Always on the hunt and word of mouth is always better!

Ingredients:

  • Lean Beef Steak
  • Mange tout and Baby Sweetcorn ( a big cheat is to head to M&S and grab one of their Rainbow Stir Fry Packs)
  • Peeled Carrot
  • Bak Choy
  • Handful of toasted mixed seeds
  • Tamari Sauce (you can use soy sauce if you’re not gluten free)

IMG_7507

#1 Grab a wok and turn the heat to high

#2 Put a knob of ghee (butter or sesame oil can be used instead) in the pan. Season your lean steak and pan fry both sides for two minutes each. Pull out of the pan and slice into strips and then put back in the pan.

#3 Grab the M&S pack of vegetables – or pre-cut – and put them in the wok. Shake and flip the plan to make sure all meat and veg are mixed and add two gluts of tamari (soy sauce) if you’re feeling spicy you could add a chilli at this point!

#4 Put in a bowl and sprinkle a handful of seeds over the top

Now go and sit down and mindfully eat your supper. Let the day go and enjoy every bite!

Green Goddess Smoothie

Green Goddess Smoothie

Green Goddess Smoothie

Green Smoothies are the perfect way to start your day. Beside the ‘green hype’ the benefits of starting your day green really do pay off. The Western Diet doesn’t provide as much fruit and vegetables to meet our daily needs. We have all been guilty of having eggs for breakfast, nuts mid-morning, chicken and quinoa for lunch and then some protein and veg for dinner. That means with even the healthiest of diets there is a significant lack of fruit and vegetables.

Green Goddess Smoothie

Due to the high fructose content of fruit, it is recommended not to have fruit post 3 pm and source only vegetables post this time. That means starting your day with a Green Smoothie can give you the head-start of getting your 7-a-day.

Green Smoothies

Green smoothies are not only great for digestion and weight management but also your skin. The skin is one of the largest organs of the body protecting us from the outside. It is the best indicator of what is going on inside…

Are you feeling dull, look tired and have dry skin?… and none of the expensive creams you buy is working? Perhaps its time to go a bit further than skin deep and have a look on the inside.

The ingredients in this smoothie give you a huge boost of those wonderful vitamins and good fats it needs to thrive.

Apples give you a boost of vitamin C, while the skin of a cucumber is full of nutrients that nourish you from the inside out. The celery and Kale give the body some good fibre and vitamins that allow greater digestion and glow. Dried spirulina contains about 60% protein. It is a complete protein containing all essential amino acids and it also contains..

  • Protein: 4 grams.
  • Vitamin B1 (Thiamin): 11% of the RDA.
  • Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): 15% of the RDA.
  • Vitamin B3 (Niacin): 4% of the RDA.
  • Copper: 21% of the RDA.
  • Iron: 11% of the RDA.

So… have I convinced you yet?

Green Goddess Smoothie

Green Smoothie Ingredients:

1 apple

2 sticks of celery

1/4 cucumber

handful spinach or kale

Half an avocado

knob of peeled ginger

3 tablespoons of lemon juice/juice of a lemon

1.25 cups of coconut water

1 teaspoon of super green powder (chlorella, spirulina etc)

We blend the greens and fruit for easy digestion, your body is able to absorb more of the vitamins and minerals without working so hard

  1. Add coconut water and chopped vegetables. Blend at a low speed until smooth.
  2. Add rest of the ingredients (except lemon and spirulina), and blend at high speed.
  3. Add spirulina
  4. Finish lemon
  5. Too make cooler add a handful of ice

Morning Motivation

We all have those weeks when the alarm for the gym goes off – and you hit snooze

You have a green smoothie for breakfast – and someone offers you a lunch out in a plush restaurant

You go tee total – and then it turns out to be your best mates birthday!

Motivation is a long term thing… there will be ups and downs in the long term plan… all you have to remember is that it is long term.

IMG_1228

You must remember the days you have done well

Plan wisely: this allows you to stay motivated.

Set aside that time where you are going to catch up with all your favourite hobbies. Get in your gym gear first thing in the morning to remind yourself at some point your are going to have to go! Organise your food menu for the week. Do your weekly shop on a sunday and prep for the week ahead.

IMG_1235

Keeping motivated is all about staying on top of your goals and re-organising them as day to day life gets in the way. Just because you didn’t achieve something today does not mean it cannot go on your to do list for tomorrow.

And when all is said and done – allow yourself those moments when you can relax and have some well deserved r&r

Peace xx

Clean Eating Salads for BBQ and Lunch Box – Quinoa and Pomegranate Salad

The Summer is finally here… well kind of… but the sun is trying its hardest!

BBQ season and Salad season is prominent and finding those wonderful and tasty dishes to brighten up your lunch box when you are sat in class and your office!

BBQ Spread

I have separated each dish to show ingredients, ease and whether you can transport it around…

So lets begin!

Quinoa, Pomegranate and Feta Salad

quinoa salad with view

  • Ease: Medium
  • Transport: Tupperware
  • Goes with: Protein or Veggies
  • Storage: Fridge 2-4 days

Ingredients:

  • Quinoa (a bag)
  • Garlic (2-3 pieces)
  • Olive oil (glug)
  • Feta (half a packet)
  • Spinach (two hand fulls)
  • Pomegranate (a small pot or one whole pomegranate)
  • Red Onion (1 small onion)
  • Basil to garnish

Method:

Wash the quinoa thoroughly – this is very important as it is covered in saponins and some people are allergic to these and it changes the flavour – when rinsed a light foam will come off it. Once rinsed place in hot water with about a 1:3 Quinoa to Water ratio. At this point for extra flavour you can add a stock cube to the mix.

While the quinoa is cooking… chop the red onion into small squares, the garlic into small chunks and feta into sizeable pieces. When the quinoa is cooked – add the garlic and half of the red onion and a glug of olive oil. The heat from the quinoa should absorb the flavour of the garlic while slightly cooking it. Add half of the feta and stir through in a figure of 8. Again, this should allow the quinoa to take in the flavour and slightly melt the cheese.

Set aside to cool down. Once cool – fluff with a fork. Then add spinach, rest of feta and sprinkle with pomegranate. I usually set aside a little feta and pomegranate for the topping. Add a little black pepper and a swirl of olive oil – garnish with some basil – eh voila! Done and ready to go. Gluten- Free, Beautiful and Down Right Delicious.

Home Grown – POP Brixton

So who hasn’t heard of Pop Brixton?

The newest addition to the vibe in the South. Pop Brixton is an amazing new space created for the local community to showcase independent start ups and businesses in Brixton.

It has been creating such a buzz with different areas quite literally “popping” up within the vicinity. As I live in Brixton I venture down to this new addition quite regularly. The vibe is great, the food is delicious and the concept fantastic.

One of my new favourite stalls has got to be Home Grown

Born at Pop Brixton and managed by Jocie and Gabriella – the girls are working to introduce the local community to Juices, fresh homemade salads and alternative coffees.

Alongside their beautiful stall they are also doing yoga and pilates first thing in the morning to start the day right!

So this is bloomin amazing as far as I am concerned! Health and nutrition slap bang in the middle of one of Brixton best hang out places…AWESOME!

So lets take a look around…

Cute, beautiful and welcoming; I explored Home Grown while chatting to Gabriella I sipped away at a Coconut Flat White. The stall offers all kinds of alternative milk – not just the average soy – from Oat to Coconut. Dairy-Free is definitely the way the world should be moving too. It is often hard to pick up a coffee where the non-dairy alternatives are available so this is a breathe of healthy fresh air

The stall is brimming with healthy produce which is used in the fresh juices and homemade salads. Juices and Salads are key to Spring and Summer lifestyle as they are light and packed full of nutrients key to making your skin and body glow.

From Immune Boosters to Green Power Home Grown caters for every juice need. For those who are members of the local Brixton Recreation Centre – this is the perfect place to pick up your post workout re-boot. It is important when doing any kind of exercising be it to pack on muscle or strip back fat – you need to get all your nutrients.

With a combination of juice and salad deals these little store really is making steps forward to bring healthy eating down to Brixton. All you lunch time needs for £8!

Get yourself down to Pop Brixton and Homegrown to try out their juices and yoga/pilates session

At the moment they have an offer… for £20 you can get un-limited classes for a week with a juice of your choice!

Otherwise drop in classes are £10

Remember to bring a mat – I use this one as its tucks away nicely in my room with no extra space taken…Perfect

Vita Coco Coconut Oil and all its beautiful uses

Coconuts – the best beauty food on the planet.

This gorgeous tropical food nourishes you from the inside out.

With a number of possible uses it is no wonder the world is going nuts for Coconuts!

If you are relatively new to this superfood here are some of the wonderful ways you can use it.

in your cooking

Organic virgin coconut oil has a soft coconut aroma and more pronounced coconut flavour.  It stands up beautifully to high heat and the flavour marries beautifully with most foods. Coconut scrambled egg, avocados on toast and even in baking. This beautiful oil gives the body all the healthy fats it needs to glow.

rice, prawns and veg

on your skin

Coconut oil is rich in many proteins. These proteins keep skin healthy and rejuvenated, both internally and externally. Proteins also contribute to cellular health and tissue repair, along with a wide range of other essential activities within the body. For any damaged cells on or near the skin, a healthy of flow of proteins guarantees their replacement at a normal rate, whereas people with protein-deficient diets heal slower and often develop more obvious scars due to the extended healing time.

in your hair

The use of coconut oil on hair helps to reduce protein loss in both damaged as well as undamaged hair. Coconut oil rich in lauric acid, has a high affinity for hair protein, and easily penetrates inside the hair shaft, leaving your hair silky and shiny. It can be used for pre-wash or post-wash hair. Depending on how thin or thick your hair is – I would recommend using over night.

hair

make up remover

The skin around your eyes is so delicate and thin – coconut oil allows you to swiftly remove make up with no tugging or rubbing. I was surprised by how quickly it took off eye makeup and by how easily it worked. “Coconut oil solubilizes or breaks up water-resistant substances used in eye shadow and mascara, releasing them from the skin and lashes,” says cosmetic chemist Joseph Cincotta.

So there you go…three wonderful ways coconut oil can be used in your daily life. Now before you go out and get sucked into the marketing… yes the big dogs have clocked on to this magic food… one tub can serve all your coconut purposes. I’ve recently been trying Vita Coco Coconut Oil raw, organic and cold-pressed this beautiful new addition is perfect. Buy small little mason jars to split it up and use around the house.

Turmeric and Ginger Dahl: detox and cleanse.

Difficulty: Easy

Take to work: Yes

Store in fridge: 1 week

Store in Freezer: One month

The combination of ginger, turmeric and lemon make this dish an immune-boosting and detoxing superstar. It’s such an easy and nourishing meal that’s perfect for a lazy mid-week dinner, and is great to take to work for lunch the following day. Lentils are packed with protein, dietary fibre and antioxidants and unlike legumes, they don’t need to be soaked before cooking, which means you can have this dish on the table in under half an hour.

Makes 2 serves

Ingredients:

1 cup (200g/7oz) toor or split mung/moong dahl (both are varieties of yellow lentils)
3 cups (750mL/25fl oz) water
1 chilli
1 tbsp grated fresh peeled ginger
1 tsp ground turmeric (you can use fresh turmeric if you prefer)
Pinch of salt and black pepper
2 tsp grated lemon zest
Coconut milk – 200ml
Juice of half a lemon

To serve: Coriander and steamed broccoli

Method:

Place the dahl, water, fresh ginger, turmeric, chilli, salt and pepper, lemon zest, coconut milk in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover with a lid and simmer for 25 minutes or until the dahl is soft

Clean Eating: Overnight Proatmeal

A lot of people say to me that they want to eat healthy but find it really hard to find healthy options when out and about. Recommended breakfasts for people on a healthy lifestyle usually revolve around Eggs and Oatmeal. This can be a pain if your office doesn’t have a microwave to heat these meals.

Well problem solved – introducing Overnight Proatmeal.

finished product

Difficulty: Easy Use by: One week Carry to work: Yes

If you make this healthy breakfast on a Sunday in batches you should have enough to last the week. This frees your time up for more hours of sleep or an extra half hour in the gym in the morning. As the oats soak in the ingredients, it is also the gift that keeps on giving, as the flavour will get deeper throughout the week.

Right: what will you need…

I recommend Kilner Jars or a strong clip top jar. This is for two reasons… 1) they look really cool 2) they seal tight all the ingredients so you can pop them in your handbag or work bag and take them on your commute

You can find them here:

Ingredients:

ingredients

  • Bananas
  • Strawberries
  • Coconut Milk
  • Chia Seeds
  • Oat milk
  • Pulsin Rice protein
  • Porridge Oats
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Honey

I use Pulsin protein as it is Vegan and Vegetarian friendly and has none of the chemicals that other protein powders have. Also as it is not a by product of dairy it is alot easier on the stomach. You can find it at most health stores or on amazon Pulsin 1Kg Brown Rice Protein Powder.

Method:

1) Set the jars out you want to use. Making this in large quantities is easier. I make mine for my boyfriend and myself and get about 3 days worth each

jars

2) Layer the bottom of the jar with banana (if you are not a fan of bananas insert any fruit you like and work with the layers)

kilner

3) Mix together in a bowl: 1/2 cup of Oats, 1/2 cup of coconut milk, 1/2 cup of oat milk. Once these are all mixed. Add 1 tbsp of Protein Powder. Add 1 tbsp of Chia Seeds. Stir these until mixed. Add Vanilla Extract to taste.

chia

4) Add about two heaped tablespoons of mixture on top of bananas then slice strawberries to form the next layer

strawberries

5) Then repeat adding different layers of the fruit until all the mixture has run out

Banana

6) When you get to the top add squeeze of honey (depending on your sweet tooth) and garnish. Then seal the jar and leave in the fridge for a minimum of 8 hours. Check back and see how much the oats and chia have absorbed. You make need to add a little more oatmilk.

finished product

If you have a couple of these ready for every morning – thats one healthy meal down and the perfect way to start your day. Full of energy and protein with non of the nasties.

I use a bigger kilner jar and take one to work and leave it in the fridge there (about 2-3 days worth)

Enjoy!
